In your free time…

1. Walks

  • State Street from Library Mall to the State Capitol (0.8 mile one way) – this pedestrian mall in the main student area is full of cafés, local shops, and a few bookstores.  If you are looking for UW Madison sports apparel, you won’t be disappointed!  The State Capitol is worth a look inside as well.  If you find yourself at the Capitol Square, consider a visit to Fromagination - https://fromagination.com/ - an amazing shop for Wisconsin artisan cheese and (edible) gifts.
  • Lakeshore Path from Memorial Union past Picnic Point to Shorewood – https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/wisconsin/howard-temin-lakeshore-path - this 2-mile (one way) nature walk along Lake Mendota offers great views of birds, blooming lily pads, and mature trees.  If you are lucky, you may see a great blue heron or a goldfinch.

For extra exercise, the walk out to the end of Picnic Point is highly recommended (1-mile one way).  https://lakeshorepreserve.wisc.edu/visit/places/picnic-point/   Both paths are good for runners, providing dirt surfaces.

  • Physics Building to Observatory Hill – this short stroll takes you to a scenic overlook and the historic Washburn Observatory:  https://lakeshorepreserve.wisc.edu/visit/places/washburn-observatory/Constructed in 1877, the 15.6-inch refracting telescope was the third largest in the nation at that time, and remained in serious scientific use for the next 80 years. The observatory is still open to the public on the first and third Wednesday of each month, and every Wednesday June through August, weather permitting.

2. Museums

  • Chazen Art Museumhttps://chazen.wisc.edu/  - this world-class museum is right on campus, at 750 University Avenue, with over 24,000 works of art in the museum’s collections representing the entire spectrum of art history across cultures, periods, media and genres.  Admission is free, and it is open every day:  weekdays 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., and weekends 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.  A café and store are also on site.
  • Madison Museum of Contemporary Art - https://www.mmoca.org/ - open Thursday-Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 227 State Street (close to the Capitol Building), free admission.  The collection includes nearly 6,000 objects, comprising one of the nation’s finest collections of Chicago Imagism as well as significant holdings in Mexican Modernist prints, Wisconsin-based artists, and contemporary photography.  The building itself is also well worth a visit, as is the gift shop.
  • There are several other museums on the Capitol Square:  see the websites at https://wisvetsmuseum.com/ and/or  https://historicalmuseum.wisconsinhistory.org/   Both the Wisconsin Veterans’ Museum and the Wisconsin Historical Museum are very well designed and have much of interest to offer.

3. Relaxing outside with a drink

  • Memorial Union Terrace - https://union.wisc.edu/visit/terrace-at-the-memorial-union/ - an iconic destination for students, faculty, and community members alike, with beautiful lake views, gorgeous sunsets, occasional live music, and food and drink options.  No reservations needed.  Enter along the east side of Memorial Union (800 Langdon Street), either inside or outside.  The Union also offers UW-Madison’s own Babcock Ice Cream at The Daily Scoop just inside the main doors.
