Description
Tests of the Standard Model and beyond with unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix have recently received attention in view of an apparent deficit in the first row: $|V_{ud}|^2+|V_{us}|^2+|V_{ub}|^2-1=-0.15(6)\%$. At the current precision level, the element $V_{ub}$ is too small to be relevant, so that the unitarity constraint reduces to the two-flavor Cabibbo pattern. I will give an overview of inputs and recent developments that enter the evaluation of the elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$, point to longstanding discrepancies and discuss their implications for the BSM searches.
